Release by leasegivenow 2004-12-29, leasegivenow - PleaseGiveNow.com is seeking to raise 3 Million USD in donations from the public to help the victims of the asian tidal wave. PleaseGiveNow.com aims to bring additional support to the millions left homeless.(PRWEB) December 29, 2004 -- According to international estimates over 58,000 people have now been killed by the tidal wave or tsunami that hit countries bordering the Indian Ocean.
PleaseGiveNow.com (http://www.PleaseGiveNow.com) has been established as a personal response to this tragedy in an attempt to raise 3 Million USD.
The U.S. Geological Survey states the magnitude 9.0 event was located off the west coast of northern Sumatra. This is the fourth largest earthquake in the world since 1900 and is the largest since the 1964 Prince William Sound, Alaska earthquake. The World Health Organisation has states “In Sri Lanka alone, there are already 250 temporary camps hosting people made homeless by the tsunami. Conditions such as overcrowding and inadequate shelter provide favorable conditions for acute respiratory infections, which can represent a major cause of death, especially for children, if left untreated.”
Jan Egeland, UN undersecretary general for humanitarian affairs and emergency relief coordinator has been quoted as saying, "We will need very substantive pledges. I think this is unprecedented because very many countries are involved."
After hearing about the crisis, Neil Selkirk decided to take action and created PleaseGiveNow.com. Neil Selkirk says "I would like to give the International Red Cross Three Million Dollars, but for me this is impossible. So I decided to create PleaseGiveNow.com."
PleaseGiveNow allows people to donate, with the aim to raise an additional 3 Million USD above all the other fundraising and relief efforts. PleaseGiveNow.com hopes to harness the power of the internet by assisting people worldwide to take a personal action and help the victims of this crisis immediately.
Neil Selkirk goes on to say "There are millions homeless in 11 countries, as an individual I really can`t make a difference but if I can encourage others to donate - maybe I can."
