2004-09-27, LANDMINES BLOW! - Landmines Blow, a Chicago based organization dedicated to raising awareness of the global landmine crisis will participate in Make A Difference Day, the largest national day of helping others.Chicago, IL (PRWEB) September 24, 2004 -- Landmines Blow, a Chicago based organization dedicated to raising awareness of the global landmine crisis will participate in Make A Difference Day, the largest national day of helping others. The event will take place on Saturday, October 23, 2004 from 8:30 AM to 3:30 PM in the West Suburban Bank parking lot at 1122 South Main Street in Lombard, Illinois. Alison Bock, Landmines Blow President said: “We are engaging America`s youth to raise funds to build a school and playground on a cleared minefield in Battambang Province in Cambodia. There will be baked goods for sale, free Starbucks coffee and an old fashioned lemonade stand.” Samlot District of Battambang Province is the most war-torn area of Cambodia. Its population consists entirely of some 45,000 returnees and Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) who lived under the rule of the Khmer Rouge for nearly 30 years, only to be driven from their homes by fighting after the coup d’etat of 1997. Samlot has the highest percentage of landmine victims and other destitute families in Cambodia. Thirty years of war, the flight of refugees, and the influx of returnees and IDPs, have taken their toll on the traditional extended family and community support system. During the past 30 years, Cambodia has witnessed an increase in the number of female-headed households, handicapped, elderly without family support, homeless, land-less people and unaccompanied minors. The breakdown of traditional family structures and consequent deterioration of basic family values, and the loss of sense of community has left many vulnerable individuals and families without support. Exacerbating the efforts at self-reliance is the ubiquitous presence of landmines. Make A Difference Day is sponsored by USA WEEKEND Magazine and its more than 580 carrier newspapers and is held in partnership with the Points of Light Foundation. Make A Difference Day supporter Paul Newman donates 100 percent of after-tax income from Newman`s Own to educational and charitable causes. Landmines Blow is a member of the United States Campaign to Ban Landmines, a nation-wide coalition of nearly 500 non-governmental organizations and thousands of individual members advocating for the US government to join the Mine Ban Treaty and sustain high levels of support for demining and victim assistance. It is a member of the 1997 Nobel Peace Prize-winning International Campaign to Ban Landmines. For additional information contact: Landmines Blow! P.O.
